The size of the area of land to be explored to date has been reduced by BHP Biliton based on its acknowledgement that longwall mining cannot be carried out successfully on the alluvial flood plains, as BHP Biliton cannot give assurances not to damage the water aquifers and cause subsidence. Hence farming communities are insisting a full independent water study be carried out .
Terms of Reference are being drafted in readiness for the water study to commence.
